Server root

The server root is the folder that holds IsleModkitServer.exe. The runner passes this path to the server plugin.

server root\
  IsleModkitServer.exe the runner
server.cfg settings and "load <resource>" lines
  resources\ one folder per resource
    hello\
      manifest.lua
      server.lua
      client.lua
      ui\index.html
data\ written by the server plugin, created when needed
    bans.json modkit.bans
    whitelist.json modkit.whitelist and modkit.reserved
    acl.json modkit.acl
garage\<steamId>.json modkit.garage, one file per player
storage\<resource>.json modkit.storage, one file per resource
client-mods\ content mods that players download (.pak .utoc .ucas)
server-mods\ content mods copied into the game server
proxy\winhttp.dll signature bypass for the game server
templates\ templates used by "new skins"
  server-plugin\build\isle-modkit-server.dll

The runner looks for the plugin at server-plugin\build\isle-modkit-server.dll inside the root first. If it is not there it tries ..\server-plugin\build\ next to the root. Without the plugin the game server still starts, but no Lua runs.

Game server

sv_gamedir in server.cfg points to the dedicated server install (Steam app 412680, branch evrima). The runner writes these files there on every start.

  • TheIsle\Saved\Config\WindowsServer\Game.ini
  • TheIsle\Saved\Config\WindowsServer\Engine.ini
  • TheIsle\Content\Paks\mod_* copied from server-mods\
  • TheIsle\Binaries\Win64\winhttp.dll copied from proxy\

Do not edit Game.ini or Engine.ini by hand. The runner overwrites them.

The working directory of the game server process is not the server root. Relative paths in io.open do not point into your resource folder. Use modkit.resources.save and modkit.resources.file for data files.

Player side

Everything the launcher and the client mod write lives under %LOCALAPPDATA%\IsleModkit\.

Path Content
steam.json Steam ID from the launcher login
connect.txt server address for the next start, deleted after use
servers.local.json written by a runner on the same PC so the launcher lists the local server
permissions.txt microphone decisions per server and resource
mods\ downloaded content mods

Resource files are never written to the player's disk. They stay in the memory of the game process.

Logs

Log Path
Server plugin, resource print output, Lua errors %LOCALAPPDATA%\IsleModkit\server-plugin.log on the server PC
Game server runner console, and TheIsle\Saved\Logs\TheIsle.log in the game server folder
Client mod, client print output isle-modkit-mod.log next to the injected isle-modkit-mod.dll
